Renewable energy developments

Plans by Fife Council to generate up to £8.6 million from renewable energy moved a step closer today.
The green light was given by the Executive Committee to start investigating the feasibility of putting very small wind turbines on land which has a Fife Council building on it.
It was agreed that feasibility studies will be carried out to identify up to 50 sites owned by the council which could be suitable for very small scale turbine developments.
These studies are the first step in the process to find out how many sites can be developed further.
At this point no specific sites have been identified but will be in due course.
Feasibility studies are expected to start this spring and it is expected they could be completed later this year.
Council Leader Alex Rowley said: “These studies are a vital part of the plans to find out if the council can put small scale wind turbines on land where there is a council building.
“As well as the possibility of creating millions of pounds of additional money for the council there’s also potential to reduce carbon emissions, which is timely news given this is national Climate Change Week.
“The size of the wind turbines the council is talking about are very small scale, between five and 20 metres in height, but it’s still really important the right sites are found and I look forward to hearing more detail on these plans in the months ahead.”
Unlike large turbines which are connected to the National Grid, these turbines would be connected to council buildings, providing power directly and reducing electricity bills.
Some very small turbines come under provisions for permitted development and may not require full planning permission.
